Colored pencils & graphite, 22.5x38"
I started this in Spring '24 and it became so confusing it wasn't quite working. I've taken it out a few times and actually hated it, other times I knew there was hope but wasn't sure how to make it work. It's a complicated one! I'd wanted a chaotic scene, and I got it!
So for ~18 months I've taken it out and each time put it back, each time unresolved in a new way.Last night I thought about this piece again, and knew how to finish it. I'm finally happy with it.
I think I'm calling it Afternoon in the Parque. That's Parque Guell in Barcelona (thus, all the background colors)... a family trip in 2005. The reminiscing and storytelling began after 2 pitchers of Sangria and got so crazy, my older daughter Heather, very animated and recounting with hand gestures, some story about her sister Gretchen across the table... Gretchen and Heather's husband Jason beyond self-containment, holding her heads in laughter, and their cousin, Lissie on the right, 10y younger and missing the jokes... gazing out at us, the viewers. I was madly snapping photos, and 20 years later drew from some of them.
